The American boxes spec Dextron because of the cold winter climate.

I just spoke to my gearbox rebuilder & he stated that here you should use 75-90.

The Dextron apparently wears the gears out, Ford use it in the local boxes & he rebuilds them all the time, changing to the 75-90 & no more issues.

It is a hard one - if you search you will find claims the other way as well.
Then there are those that recommend the Mobile 1 synthetic ATF.

If you do an oil check such as this;
http://www.datateck.com.au/lube/castr_a ... &Model=497

Which is the factory recommended oil

then there are the mixed oil recommendations such as
- ATF DEX III and VMX80 ( all Castrol ) with an additive, Nulon G70. Works well, even in the cold.

A comment I came across was Castrol 75/85 will be OK but the syncros balk when cold (read canberra cold).

I thought Mal Woods recommends Castrol Transmax Z for T5s - based on your comments I guess not.

Go with the experts I guess.

Agree with Boof that the change can be sluggish in cold climates with the 75-90, but doubt if Cabooture ever gets to Canberra winter temps ....... :D

Note, my guy is based near me, so a "temperate zone" ........ :$

I too have found DXIII to be to thin and causes noise and wear. I use a combo of DXIII and 60 to 80 weight gear oil. No issues in the last 10 years.

Transmax Z is Castrols Synthetic version of DexIII
It or the Mobil 1 might be the best option over mineral DexIII if a definitive answer can't be found on the other gear oils mentioned.

The last T5 WC I rebuilt had a "Use Only Castrol GTX" sticker on the side.

Dura gear GL4 75-85. Its thin like ATF, This normally makes the changes better as well in most boxes I've put it in, in Lieu of ATF, MR automotive put me on to it for Landrover gear boxes to replace atf

I contacted Mal Wood back in Jan/Feb re my T56 and he responded
Hello Justin,

What oil are you using in the transmission?

You should be using 4 litres of Dex 3 ATF mineral oil not synthetic.

If you are not using this oil it will be difficult to shift.

Regards, Mal
Cheers,
