Ok a question for you gurus
I'm going to rebuild a 302 Windsor and would like some advice of selecting a Cam shaft
Currently I looking at products from Competition cams and their range of cam/lifter kits (flat hydraulic tappets) sold at summit racing
The engine I am building will have the standard head with a clean up of the ports and most likely hardened valve seats. I also have an edlebrok dual plain manifold, a 600 holley and a set of stainless steel Tri Y headers. So now you know i'm not looking to build a fire breathing monster. Just an improvement in the low to mid rev range, and a nice Idle. I'm also looking at entry level roller rockers. as my engine currently has rail type rockers, would that require valves with slightly shorter stems? Any advice would be appreciated.

Mine is a comp cams 220/220 @ 0.050 and it's pretty mild in a 347.
Something like the CL31-218-2 kit would work.

Although Windsors often like a little more exhaust duration.

How about a Lunati 10350101LK 214/224 @ 0.050?
Or 219/227 @ 0.050 10350702LK

Depending on your budget, you could also switch over to a roller cam and not have to worry about proper run-in procedure. You'd need to remove the inlet manifold to get the roller lifters in though.

Stock heads you want some extra exhaust timing. Look at some of the smaller Comp Extreme energy cams, maybe this one

Mate have you priced what you want to do to the stock heads? For a little more you could purchase some entry level Edelbrock e street heads and will provide a better outcome but not sure if appearance is a factor for you.

Can always paint alloy heads to help make them look more like stock.

Ok let just say I look at entry level Alloy heads as Trav has suggested will the nice stainless steel tri Y's that I have already bought, fit on them? Because if that was possible I would go down the path of buying Alloy heads.

Yes, most alloy heads (all except the high end ones) have the exhaust ports in the same place as the stock heads, so your tri-y's will fit fine.

thanks Hybrid and every one else. It looks to me like a set of edelbrok heads might be the go. seeing as I was quoted 600 bucks per head for machining etc. That now poses another question, a good match of camshaft for the afore mentioned heads

If you still want a mild idle etc, then the ones already listed will still work well.
It's really only engine capacity that will change the chracteristics of a cam.

Bigger capacity engine with the same cam will behave more mildly.
